Paleo Beauty Friday! Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Since starting this Paleo journey my eyes have been opened up to a whole new world, obviously, who knew I could live without bread, pasta, oatmeal, yogurt, and cheese! But today I’m talking to you about all of the natural and wonderful Paleo Beauty Secrets! There are so many awesome uses for the food we eat other than filling our bellies: so many in fact that I wanted to start sharing them with all of you. To me the paleo journey is not just about eating it's about living a more natural, organic life: inside and out!

To start things off I want to share my love of coconut oil: Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. My hope is that a little, if not all of it, will rub off on you! I’m a huge fan of using virgin coconut oil for a variety of beauty-related purposes: it’s cheap, it’s ultra moisturizing and the smell just transports you to the beach, coconut rum drink in hand… can’t you feel the warm sea breeze on your face?

My three favorite beauty benefits of coconut oil are removing makeup, conditioning my hair, and moisturizing my skin. To easily incorporate coconut oil in your daily routine buy a small apothecary dropper bottle, warm some coconut oil to a liquid (it is a solid below 76˚F) in a microwave or a hot water bath, and pour into the apothecary bottle. This will enable you to easily apply the oils as a makeup remover and moisturizer.

Eye Makeup Remover- Coconut oil is natural, has no additives, and causes no irritation, burning, or stinging!  To remove make-up at the end of the day, use your fingers to work 2-3 drops of coconut oil into your eye lids and lashes, your eye makeup will be loosened, and you can then wash with a warm washcloth and your normal cleanser. This will remove the oil and all of the makeup! You can then tone and moisturize as necessary.  If you just need to remove a little eye liner, put 1-2 drops on a q-tip and just swipe away the makeup. An added bonus of using coconut oil as a makeup remover is that it is also a great conditioner/moisturizer, so your eye lashes and the skin around your eyes will be softer and more supple!

Total Body Moisturizer- Coconut oil keeps your skin hydrated; perfect for use during the winter on dry hands, feet, cuticles, and elbows. Virgin coconut oil is loaded with antioxidants, which helps to protect the skin against free radical damage and keep it smooth and supple. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to mineral oil, but, unlike mineral oil, there’s no chance of having any adverse side effects (once after a nice hot shower I put on some nice lavender smelling baby oil and broke out in hives!!). Coconut oil also delays wrinkles and the sagging of skin!! All you have to do is massage some of the oil over your body after you get out of the shower and your skin is still a bit damp just like you would with another moisturizer. You can also drizzle a little coconut oil in your bathwater and enjoy the soak. You’ll be moisturized from head to toe and will smell—and feel—divine afterward!

Hair Conditioner- Coconut oil is the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps hair to grow healthy and gives hair extra shine. Massaging coconut oil regularly into your head ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff and lice (a great natural tip for you college kids and Mom’s out there! Keep your kids lice free). On dry hair, work a tablespoon or two of oil into the scalp and then in an outward circular motion towards the ends, wrap your head in a bandanna, towel wrap or shower cap. Let the oil soak in overnight if you can ( if not let it sit for a few hours while you’re checking email, watching TV, or even doing laundry!) shower in the morning and shampoo as normal, condition if needed (depending on hair type). Your hair will be shinny and beautiful, don’t be shocked by the compliments! For those of you using high heat styling techniques coconut oil will help protect your hair and prevent breakage and split ends. It can also help damaged hair re-grow; it provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. Not to mention it will leave your hair smelling wonderful! You may find yourself shaking your head just to catch a whiff…
